At Felix and Fingers, one of the things we pride ourselves on is the fact that no two gigs are the same.  This was especially true this past Saturday, as Greg and I made a road trip to Iowa for two gigs in a single day, starting at the Iowa City University Club and finished the day/night in Cedar Rapids.

Iowa City University Club

We arrived at the Iowa City University Club around 9:30am to start setting up for our client’s mother’s 90th birthday.  Guests had flown in from all over the country, and the Iowa City University Club was ready to accommodate them!  Their East Ballroom is a beautiful space which could accommodate up to 300 guests, and it is surrounded by a screened-in Sun Porch which can be rented separately for more intimate events.  We learned that they do a lot of corporate meetings and weddings there, which makes perfect sense!  The Iowa City University Club has an on-site catering staff which can build a menu to suit the needs of any event.

That Sun Porch Came in Handy…

As traveling musicians, we are well aware that problems can arise at any moment, so we are always prepared to turn those into opportunities!  This particular time, when we were loading into the Iowa City University Club I thought I might save time by throwing my (full) water bottle into my duffel (with all of my clothes in it) to reduce the amount of things I had to carry.  Of course, the water bottle opened and pretty much only drenched the one thing I needed to wear all day- my black dress.  Luckily the sun was shining that morning so I got to let it dry out at least a little on the Sun Porch for a bit, but I may or may not have been wearing a slightly damp dress all day.  The take-away?  Black is the best color for traveling musicians.  You might know you’re damp, but no one else does!  (Just don’t hug anyone.)

Just hangin’ out…

What’s a Dueling Show look like at a 90th Birthday?

That’s the beauty of what we do!  It certainly wasn’t anything like a public bar show, or even a wedding.  Our goal is always to be the perfect form of entertainment for whatever audience we are performing to.  In this case, the requests we were getting were mostly jazz, Beatles, Buddy Holly and the like.  We might be used to getting people dancing and yelling lyrics back at us at some events, but that’s why we have our trusty request forms!  It’s the quickest way to see exactly what everyone wants to hear, and when we were finished we had so many guests tell us they were so relieved after being nervous about having dueling pianos, thinking it was going to be rowdy and crazy for their intimate family get-together.
