Singing telegrams are sort of a lost art form.  We don’t really see them anymore.  My recollection of them involves watching old movies.  The guy in a bell-hop type uniform shows us, blows a note through a pitch pipe, and sings a brief song to the person of honor.  Well times have changed, but people still love music!

I get very excited whenever someone contacts us to perform a singing telegram.  My favorite experiences as a musician are the times I know I’ll never be forgotten.  That’s why I love weddings so much.  No one ever forgets who performed the live music at their wedding!  Singing telegrams are similar.  They are such a once in a lifetime experience, and they give a person an incredibly unique memory.

We typically send either one or two people.  If we send one, that person will sing.  If we send two, we’ll either both sing, or one of us can sometimes bring an accordion or guitar to add that extra layer to the music!

Singing Telegrams for a Group

There are usually two types of singing telegrams.  The first is the group experience.  In this type of singing telegram we’re usually hired by someone holding a party, either at home or at an office.  The hire us to come in an sing a few songs for either a person or a group of people. The people who hired you obviously know we are coming, so it adds some fun anticipation to the party, knowing the big surprise is on the way!

I recall doing one of these for a lady named Mary.  Her co-workers hired us to come and sing her some songs on her birthday.  We always ask if they have specific songs they want, and they thought it would be cool to do songs featuring the name Mary.  We showed up and sang, “Proud Mary,” “Last Dance with Mary Jane,” and “Along Comes Mary,” along with a couple others.  Mary was thrilled, and everyone else thought it was hilarious and original!

Singing Telegrams for an Individual

The other type of singing telegram is the individual experience.  This is when we are hired by someone out of town to go to a friend or family member’s house to sing for them.  This happened to me yesterday, and it’s why I decide to finally write a blog about it!  Kathy, who lives in the Chicago suburbs, was going to be celebrating her birthday with a quiet dinner at home.  Her family from Texas contacted us and thought it would be a great birthday gift for me to go over to her house and sing!

Singing Telegram

Happy Birthday Kathy!

I showed up on her front porch knocked and told her her family from Texas had sent me over to sing some songs for her on her birthday!  She shrieked with delight and invited me in.  Her neighbor, who was having dinner with her, had been told ahead of time, so she could record the whole thing!  I sang her some of her favorite songs, including “Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” “Uptown Funk,” and “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera, open of her favorite musicals!  The best part about hiring dueling piano players for a singing telegram is that we literally know songs from every single genre!

Doesn’t this all sound cool?  If you want to hire us to perform a singing telegram for your friend, family member, or co-worker, get in touch with us today! 🙂
