Your wedding ceremony is a special and meaningful moment in your life, and it’s important to make sure everything runs smoothly. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when planning your ceremony.
Dos
- Choose music that has personal significance to you and your partner.
- Consider the lyrics of the songs and make sure they align with your beliefs and values.
- Think about the mood you want to set for each portion of the ceremony, and choose music accordingly. (parent seating, wedding party processional, main processional, special ceremonies, recessional, etc)
- Work with your wedding planner or ceremony officiant to ensure the music fits the flow and timing of the ceremony.
- Take into account any cultural or religious traditions you want to incorporate into your ceremony.
- Consider incorporating a mix of classical, traditional, and contemporary music to appeal to a wide range of tastes.
- Even if you are opting for a live ceremony, strongly consider a recorded recessional. This allows us to really amplify the song and helps to transition the day from the more formal ceremony mood to an upbeat party mood for cocktails.
Don’ts
- Don’t choose music that is too distracting or upbeat for the serious and meaningful moments of the ceremony.
- Don’t overlook the importance of music selection, but also don’t stress out over it too much. It’s an important decision to make (not last minute!), but if you’re losing sleep over it, you might be thinking too hard!
- Don’t choose music with explicit lyrics or themes that may be inappropriate for a wedding ceremony.
- Don’t choose music that is too long or will disrupt the flow of the ceremony (unless you’re alright with fading it out when needed).
- Don’t choose music that is too obscure or not widely recognized by your guests. Remember, certain songs are used at a lot of weddings for a good reason! Don’t get so caught up in needing to be original that you lose sight of why you’re selecting these songs in the first place!
- Don’t have a vocalist sing your processional. The focus should be on the people processing, not the musicians.
By following these dos and don’ts, you can ensure that your wedding ceremony is a beautiful and memorable experience for you, your partner, and your guests.
