There was an aura of excitement in the air as I entered the James Hotel in downtown Chicago for our “Cakes and Keys” extravaganza. Doing a show to benefit the unfortunate after having eaten a decadent meal of delicious steak was bittersweet. Icing Smiles was the host of this evening’s festivities and their goal was a noble one, to get local cuisine and all respected chefs in the area to provide cakes and other tasty treats for children who wouldn’t otherwise receive them due to financial hardship or sickness.
The Cakes and Keys event was in full swing and the crowd was loving us. The requests were coming fast and easy and the crowd has been soothed into a music fueled haze. We played background music as a delicious dinner was served, buffet style, and then segued into a full Dueling show that lasted until the silent auction began.
Great Fundraising Items Showcased At James Hotel Event
The auction was a rousing success as we began our second set. Some high ticket items include a boxing glove signed by Muhammad Ali, a World Series baseball signed by the Championship Cubs, and a bulls NBA Championship print signed my Michael Jordan. These items brought in a hefty sum, to say the least. Silent auctions can be fun for me because I then get to play Emcee and have a little fun with announcing the items. This was all about raising money to support the infrastructure of Icing Smiles and its hundreds of volunteer staff and bakers. There have been over 13,000 cakes delivered and counting to children in need on their birthdays or other celebratory gatherings. The Cakes and Keys event was a great success overall in my mind. We raised a whole bunch of money for people who truly deserve it. As a Felix & Fingers company member, I was honored to have been a part of Icing Smiles’ cause.
