Dueling pianos is a great show because of it’s flexibility. One of our favorite types of booking to play are college/university events. One of our favorite colleges to perform at is Grinnell in Grinnell Iowa.

But not in the typical sense. This show was more like a Felix and Fingers homecoming seeing as we’ve performed at Grinnell for 3 different events. It is one of my personal all time favorite gigs because the energy is always so great. Playing their annual May Waltz, the final dance/event of the school year, always results in a packed dance floor and non-stop fun.

College Events
This particular year hosted the Waltz in the student cafeteria. Although it doesn’t sound like an appetizing venue, after the tables are cleared out and decorations are brought in, the room doubles as a perfect event venue. I believe they also host wedding receptions here, but I could be mistaken.
The Grinnell Waltz typically includes some waltzing…though let’s face it, 20-somethings aren’t necessarily thrilled about dances that go back hundreds of years. We did a couple jazz standards to start of the event, but when the students started to pour in around 10pm, people were ready to turn it up!

Grinnell never disappoints. The students danced and sang to every tune. And one of my favorite parts of the night is when we were able to break into Have Nagila. Our first year in Grinnell taught us that there is a large Jewish population at the school, and though we had no plans of performing Hava Nagila, it was a show stopper we won’t soon forget. This year was no different.
College events are some of the most interesting shows we have the pleasure of playing and we’re thankful for our long standing relationship with Grinnell. A big thanks to the staff and student committee who decided to bring us out again!
