This weekend, Mike and I traveled to the Hines Center in Owensboro, KY, to provide dueling piano entertainment for a wedding. We started a bit later than we usually do for a wedding event, as were not asked to provide music for the ceremony.  On this day, we provided background jazz music for the dinner and cocktails. Immediately after, we livened things up with dueling piano entertainment.

There was not an open bar, and people seemed a bit more reserved at the start of the dueling piano session.  But even without the alcohol, it didn’t take us long to get the party started. Struggling at first with a lack of requests, we quickly played some dance, country, sing-along, and 80’s to find out what kind of music the crowd was gravitating towards.

However, I think it was a little bit of everything that proved it was a “no-holds-barred” all-request show.  The requests soon began pouring in, and as usual, people hit the dance floor and stayed there the entire night.  For the last 30 minutes of the party, we provided DJ entertainment.

This was the dance floor prior to Felix and Fingers Dueling Piano entertainment.

The venue was quite large.  A curtain was draped across half of the room, because it would have otherwise been much too large.  Even so, this left quite a lot of space for dancing.  And although it might have at first appeared to be too much space, that was absolutely not the case.  Here you can see how we turned an empty dance floor into the main attraction area of the night. Our roles as entertainers and performers was increasingly evident that night.  Our job is not just to take requests and play songs, but to ensure that the audience/guests have a great time and enjoy themselves. It was good to see how quickly we were able to turn things around to meet the expectations of the bride and groom.

I must say that I greatly appreciate the efforts of the bride, Robin, who shared in the effort of getting her guests out onto the floor.  As we kicked off our first few songs, she immediately hit the floor to show her guests how to move.

Photos that night were taken by Dream Copy Photography, and although I haven’t seen the pictures he has taken of this wedding, I did find this one of the bride and groom and their wedding party.

A Tradition Like We Had Never Witnessed

About halfway through the dueling piano show, I was given a request slip by someone who asked that we announce their request would be danced to as per their tradition.  The song request was for ‘Shout.’  And if you have ever seen the film Animal House, you might already guess what their tradition was. As in the film (like John Belushi,) each guest took turns shaking their arms and legs in the air after diving on to the floor and flipping on to their backs.
