Part 2 of Greg’s and my double gig day in Iowa landed us in Cedar Rapids, to play for a fundraiser for Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity (Click here to read Part 1 in Iowa City.)  This was definitely a change of pace!  The venue was absolutely HUGE, and being a fundraiser, our focus was more about getting people involved directly in our show.  In doing so, we got to meet a lot of truly amazing people… and watch them sing and dance to some of their favorite songs!

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity

Before performing at Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Steaks and Stilettos Fundraiser, I honestly didn’t know much about Habitat except for the fact that they build houses.  Getting to know some of the sponsors and volunteers of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity was a great way to learn about what they do, and I was immediately glad the reason we were there was to help fund their amazing cause!  Over a third of our country have housing problems such as poor quality shelter, overcrowding and homelessness.  Habitat helps solve this massive issue by working WITH applicants to put them in a safer, more affordable environment while coaching them on things budgeting and home maintenance.  That was one thing that really stuck out to me, because it’s like the old “give a man a fish” saying.  Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity doesn’t give hand-outs, they give “fishing poles” to people who really need it… improving the lives of their applicants and the entire community!

ReStore!

Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity also has something called ReStore, a store where manufacturers, contractors, businesses and individuals donate discontinued, new and used building materials that would’ve otherwise gone to a landfill (in perfectly good condition!)  By purchasing these items, the community helps keep landfills under control, and the best part is that income generated at ReStore goes right back to Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity!

Fun-raising at the DoubleTree Cedar Rapids

Speaking of money going back to Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity, Felix and Fingers was more than happy to donate any tips we generated to the cause.  On top of the silent auction, souvenir glass and t-shirt sales (for those of you wondering, yes I bought one- it was a great cause and all of my clothes were still wet from Part 1 of our journey that day) we generated extra fundraising by encouraging tips with requests, getting guests to bid on their executives and volunteers to come up and sing with us, and lots of other activities!  The DoubleTree Cedar Rapids offered a great space to do all of this, as their banquet hall was enormous and beautifully decorated!  To top it all off, they got local celebrity Marcy Jones of CBS2 to emcee the event, making it extra special since she’d been a supporter of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity for quite some time.
